From Green Fingers To Green Issues Bents Has Got It Covered

    (27/03/2008)

Bents Garden & Home in Glazebury near Leigh is just one GCA member that is already taking action having identified five of its own footprints, Green Footprints; areas where – as a business – it believes it can make a difference to the world and its surrounding environment, helping to maintain sustainability and making it a better place to be.

As the GCA announced its new garden centre campaign to promote plants as ‘clean air machines’, Bents  launches its own ‘Green Fingers to Green Issues’ statement which has been developed over the past two months to demonstrate the Centre’s commitment to both the environment and social responsibility.  The statement incorporates the Centre’s five Green Footprints:

    1. Recycling – Bents’ commitment to the 3 Rs; Recycling, Reducing and Reusing
    2. Water efficiency – helping to maintain sustainability for future generations Bents has operated a highly efficient and self-reliant water recycling programme since 197x
    3. Healthy living - keeping fit and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be achieved in many ways and Bents encourages its customers to discover what’s right for them and help them reap the rewards
    4. Social responsibility - always looking for opportunities to support the local community and working with them to maintain a strong and healthy society
    5. Trading fairly and responsibly – a strong belief in trading fairly and responsibly with all suppliers from local sources to those further a field

Says Matthew Bent, Managing Director at Bents Garden & Home:  “The buzz words at this year’s GCA conference were definitely climate change and carbon footprints and we all left with a duty to tackle these issues head on.  At Bents we have already been working hard to clarify our commitment and thought now was the ideal time to launch our new statement.

“We believe our Green Fingers to Green Issues statement, which incorporates our Green Footprints, demonstrates a strong commitment to the environment both in terms of the climate and our social responsibility.  However, we are always seeking out new opportunities for improvement and ways in which we can enhance the work we are already doing.”

Bents is currently in the process of appointing a ‘Green Ambassador’ from its team of colleagues who will be responsible for monitoring these footprints and researching new opportunities for improvement to help further Bents’ commitment to the environment.
