If You Go Down to the Woods Today...

If you go down to Windy Bank Woods today you’ll be in for a great surprise! The Mersey Community Forest in Glazebury near Warrington, has been boosted by a tree planting scheme co-ordinated by Bents Garden & Home, on land leading up to and bordering the Woods.
Bents, which is located just a mile from Windy Bank Woods, has completed an extensive project, planting several thousand saplings as part of its 10 year vision to help improve areas of land surrounding the Centre.
This latest phase of planting, which uses indigenous local trees, further enhances Bents commitment to the local environment having already planted a total of 5 acres over the past few years. Bents’ previous tree planting programmes have already naturalized and are providing plenty of food and habitat for wildlife.
The completion of this project quickly follows the launch of Bents’ Green Fingers to Green Issues campaign; topics identified by Bents where, as a business, they can make a real difference. The campaign includes five Green Footprints, one of which is a commitment to Social Responsibility particularly on a local basis.
Says Matthew Bent, Managing Director at Bents Garden & Home: “Our fourth footprint states that we are always looking for opportunities to support our local community and ways to work with them to maintain a strong and healthy society.
“Our tree planting scheme is a great way in which we can help enhance our local surroundings, ensuring a commitment to open space and creating a safe haven for wildlife. We hope our neighbours and surrounding community will get as much enjoyment out of the new woodland as we will.”
Bents are constantly reviewing and researching opportunities for improvement and by growing almost 60% of plants at its on-site nurseries at Glazebury have been able to cut transport requirements. It has also operated a plant pot recycling scheme for the past 10 years encouraging customers to return their plastic Bents plant pot and receive 50p off future plant purchases.
Says Matthew: “We really do believe passionately in our environment and - as Green Fingers to Green Issues states – think that if we all take small steps, together we can achieve a bigger goal. Our tree planting scheme is just one of the steps we are taking.”
