Bents Blog Post #14

Let’s talk muck!  Well rotted organic material is an excellent food for all types of soil, providing all the necessary nourishment required and helping with long term composition.  Compost bins are a great way of helping to reduce your household waste and a fantastic ‘green’ addition to the garden.  I’m always checking on the progress of our composter (I’m a bit impatient!) and have found that Garotta – an organic compound which builds heat – helps to break things down more quickly.  It really gets the compost going!  Organic Fertilizer and Chicken Poultry Manure are also great alternatives to traditional mulch products.

Use the mulch on your flowerbeds and hoe regularly – this will help prevent the soil from cracking when it’s dry.  It also helps to retain water by reducing evaporation and aids weed control – which is always a bonus in my book!
