Herbaceous or evergreen.

A rhizomatous grass with linear, often strikingly coloured leaves, and dense or lax panicles of brownish flowers in summer. Compact and mound-forming, the deciduous grass has needle-like leaves that are bright yellow in spring, later becoming grey-green.
