The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hortbux' collection is known for its compact and versatile varieties, perfect for small gardens or as hedging alternatives. These hydrangeas typically grow up to 50 cm (20 inches) in height and spread. The flower colour can vary depending on soil pH. In acidic soils, the blooms are mauve-blue, while in alkaline soils, they turn pink, although each plant varies with sometimes a subtle mixture of both hues. They produce an abundance of mophead blooms from late spring to autumn. The Hortbux collection is ideal for hedging or filling patio pots, offering a showy and disease-free alternative to low-growing box hedging.
Hardy in the UK, frost can cause a lot of damage to young buds, reducing the number of flowers, so it's advisable to protect your plant with fleece if freezing weather is likely. Pests can be a problem such as capsid bugs and vine weevil should be monitored. Diseases may be subject to leaf spot on the plant as it is woody - this may show in grey moulds, powdery mildews or honey fungus and should be treated accordingly. May cause mild stomach upset if ingested, contact with foliage may aggravate skin allergies.
Hydrangeas can be pruned back hard in the summer to remove dead material and to stimulate fresh strong new growth from the base which will produce the best flowers. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
