Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly known as mophead hydrangea, is a popular garden plant known for its large, round flower clusters. The mophead blue variety is particularly striking due to its vibrant blue blooms, which appear in acidic soil conditions, these could turn pink in alkaline soil. This deciduous shrub typically grows to about 3 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. It blooms in the summer and can rebloom throughout the season. Hydrangea macrophylla is perfect for creating a classic cottage garden look and can be used as a border plant or in mixed garden beds.
Hardy in the UK, frost can cause a lot of damage to young buds, reducing the number of flowers, so it's advisable to protect your plant with fleece if freezing weather is likely. Pests can be a problem such as capsid bugs and vine weevil should be monitored. Diseases may be subject to leaf spot on the plant as it is woody - this may show in grey moulds, powdery mildews or honey fungus and should be treated accordingly. May cause mild stomach upset if ingested, contact with foliage may aggravate skin allergies.
Hydrangeas can be pruned back hard in the summer to remove dead material and to stimulate fresh strong new growth from the base which will produce the best flowers. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
