How to paint your fence:
Before you Start:
The oil works its magic on dry days when the temperature is above 10°C. Make sure your decking is completely dry before you apply it too.
Untreated, weathered decking
Untreated decking is really easy to prepare. All you need to do is use a restorer to bring out the natural colour of your deck. This will also help the oil adhere to the surface better.
Previously finished decking
- Use decking cleaner to remove dust, grease, oil, mildew and algae.
- If you notice any patches that are loose, peeling or flaking you will need to remove them otherwise your oil will be patchy. Use decking stripper to completely remove the top layer and take it back to the bare wood.
- Protect bare ends with grain protector to prevent moisture from seeping in.
New wood
You need to let brand new wood weather naturally for around six months before you can oil it. This ensures that any pre-treatment has eroded giving you a fresh surface to apply the oil.
- Once your wood has weathered, use a scrubbing brush and some decking cleaner to completely remove traces of the pre-treatment.
- Rinse it thoroughly with water, ideally using a pressure washer.
To make sure you’ve removed all the coating, throw some water on your decking. If it beads, you need to keep scrubbing and cleaning.
Application:
- Give the oil a good shake and pour the contents into a suitable metal or plastic container. If you’re using more than one tin, mix them together but don’t dilute!
- Apply a generous amount of oil to the decking using a brush or roller. Paint with the grain and focus on three to four boards at a time to ensure you don’t get any overlap lines. Wait four hours for the coat to dry.
- Once the first coat has dried, apply a second coat and wait four hours for it to dry.
And that’s it! Your decking is now oiled and healthy.
Aftercare:
Cleaning
Regularly cleaning your decking will not only keep it looking good, but it’ll keep it in a good condition too. Use a stiff brush to remove dirt, grime, dust, algae, mildew and anything else that ruins the aesthetics of your deck.
Repairs
Repairing your deck is really easy and doesn’t take much effort. Just sand down the damaged area and apply a coat of the oil and your decking will be good as new.
